Meet Dr. Cain

As a master diagnostician with specialized training in children, trauma, and neuropsychology, I am committed to a thorough understanding of each child and family I work with, and to identifying what each child needs in order to be happy and well-adjusted. My approach is holistic, taking into consideration all areas of a child’s life and functioning, and centers on strengthening the parent-child bond and helping to improve children’s self-esteem and enhance parents’ confidence and parenting skills. I draw from a wide range of validated treatment approaches and methods, working as a team with parents to guide them toward loving, effective communication with their children, and toward the positive outcomes they are seeking.

Hi! I’m Dr. Cain.

I have always loved working with children. I have worked with children in various settings since I was young. When I was in university, I began to notice that children’s behavior followed some predictable patterns, influenced by the behavior of the adults caring for them. I began to naturally discover the principles of behaviorism and the principles of attachment theory just by observing the children I was working with, before I learned about these things in school.

Over the years, I began integrating what I learned academically with what I knew from my experiences with so many children. This resulted in a highly nuanced understanding of how children’s individual needs and circumstances interact with the behavior of the adults in their lives. I also learned that people valued my observations and insights and found them helpful.

Today, I am glad to work in a profession that allows me to share this knowledge with parents as we work together to help children become happier and healthier.

Many of the children I worked with were unhappy or ill-behaved. I noticed that some of them avoided adults. Concerned about them, I began developing ways to reach them, emotionally, so that they could experience the joy and comfort that comes with being able to trust an adult and receive love. I realized that I had an ability to get them to bond with me when they would not bond with other adults, and then I noticed that their behavior improved, not just with me but with others as well.

I am also a pianist. I was classically trained through the Royal Conservatory of Music, a Canada-wide method of piano training through the University of Toronto. I enjoy playing relaxing piano music, and especially appreciate the musical styles of musicians such as Jim Brickman, Josh Groban, Yiruma, Enya, and others.
